Job Description

The Senior Systems Administrator is a key member of the team that is responsible for ensuring that Indigo’s information systems are extremely reliable, available, and secure. This role is responsible for the operational efficiency of the existing information systems at Indigo. This position is responsible to work with other team members to restore services, minimizing downtime during any disruptions.


  • Oversight for information systems managed on premises, in the cloud or in the data centres 
  • Design, schedule, plan and implement system upgrades to determine feasibility, cost, time required and compatibility with current system
  • Perform senior level server design and capacity planning
  • Provide senior level leadership and consultation in planning and project forums by participating in all areas of analysis, quality assurance and performance tuning with the project team, including testing before migration into production
  • Develop and maintain standards and tools to support the production environment
  • Proactively define opportunities for operational efficiency, through technology refreshes, migration and/or consolidations across the environment
  • Develop and maintain detailed flow charts and diagrams outlining systems capabilities and processes.
  • Provide advanced 3rd level systems support by:
    • Participating in 24x7 on-call technical support
    • Understanding and working within the problem, change and incident control processes
    • Analyzing and resolving complex operational and procedural problems with regards to system software and performance; document issues and resolutions for future reference
    • Working as a senior team member with other technical staff, such as networking, to ensure connectivity and compatibility between systems 
  • Perform detailed evaluation, planning, testing, implementation, maintenance and upgrades of server hardware and system software products
  • Perform software code promotions for development
  • Proactively monitor and test system performance, collect and analyze metrics and provide statistics, reports and recommended action plan
  • Work as part of the infrastructure architecture team to define and select emerging hardware and software products, services, protocols, standards and best practices in support of the production environment
  • Develop, implement and maintain detailed documentation as it relates to system administration and configuration, policies & procedures and disaster recovery at a senior level
  • Record and maintain hardware and software inventories, site and/or server licensing, and user access and security. 
  • Develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging existing technologies
  • Lead key departmental initiatives in a senior role, including disaster recovery
  • Act as an advocate for the customer by placing them at the forefront of all decision-making and design processes
  • Proactively identify and anticipate customer expectations and needs
  • Embrace and seek out technology that creates high tech and high touch solutions for Indigo’s customers
  • Challenge the status quo by consistently identifying areas for improvement, diagnosing issues and working to resolve them
  • Play a key role in the development of team members that are less senior and act as mentor 
  • Collaborate with others to drive flexible and iterative solutions, quickly and easily

  • Post-secondary college diploma or university degree in the field of computer science degree, or a combination of related experience and education
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of relevant hands-on experience in a large highly available enterprise environment
  • Demonstrated experience installing, maintaining, operating, tuning and troubleshooting complex operating systems and applications in a heterogeneous high-volume environment
  • Proven experience with server implementation and maintenance including experience with systems planning, security management and general best practices.
  • Proven experience with systems capacity planning, trending, security principles, and general systems management best practices. 
  • Experience in overseeing the design, development and implementation of infrastructure products and projects
  • Working knowledge of Cloud technologies (Azure/Amazon/Google etc.)
  • Excellent technical knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server installation, administration, configuration, and security.
  • Strong Technical knowledge of Linux, RedHat, SUSE.
  • Solid in-depth understanding of Advanced Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Radius, WINS and TCP/IP
  • Excellent technical knowledge of Hybrid Office 365/Exchange Server installation, administration, configuration, and security
  • Knowledge of configuration and use of Containers, use of Ansible and/or Kubernetes.
  • Ability to maintain the entire Continuous Integration suite of tools (JIRA, Jira Service Desk, Confluence, Bitbucket, TeamCity, and Octopus Deploy)
  • The following is a list of preferred experience/qualifications:
    • Significant experience with Enterprise Systems Monitoring and Management tools.
    • Experience with Intel and AMD hardware
    • Significant experience with ESX VMware 
    • Knowledge of IIS, .net, and production load balancers.
    • Knowledge of creation and deployment of SSL certificates.
    • Strong Knowledge of Veritas NetBackup is desirable.
    • Knowledge of Security operations tools.
    • SMTP Anti-virus and email SPAM filters configuration and maintenance.
    • Senior level working technical knowledge of scripting languages such as PowerShell, Perl, SNMP, Shell Scripting, Python
    • Strong understanding of operational processes and procedures
    • Proven ability with the planning and installation of third-party software
    • Familiarity with system backup and restores
      • Strong Knowledge of Veritas NetBackup is desirable.
    • Certifications considered an asset 
    • Retail experience
