Job Description
As the Category Manager, Reading, you will ensure that Indigo is the primary conduit for reading inspiration and book purchases in Canada. This role will drive profitability through strategies that inspire consumers, and curate book assortments, while reflecting a deep understanding of the customer’s evolving interests and needs.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Develop, socialize and implement a category strategy, creating and enhancing customer experiences while ensuring the achievement of financial goals
- Proactively identify and anticipate customer expectations and needs
- Lead team in identifying key sales opportunities and trends to rapidly evolve the business to meet customer interests; leverage insights to inform future reading and experience strategies
- Negotiations with vendors to maximize sales and profits, and gain the best possible terms of engagement
- Actively source books that augment the customer experience and inspire customers to purchase
- Collaborate with suppliers and Indigo Press to meet customer interests where traditional publishing lags
- Strategize and execute collaboratively with Category Manager, Experience & Curation, to ensure alignment between reading and experience strategies
- Act as an advocate for the customer by placing them at the forefront of all design and decision-making processes
- Support end-to-end process redesign by helping remove unnecessary work and focus on work that aligns with the strategy and adds value
- Strategize collaboratively with the Planning Manager to develop financial plans that meet customer and corporate needs and support the Reading and Category Strategy
- Seek out and maintain positive vendor relationships focusing on finding new and brand-appropriate merchandise
- Partner with the Print Experience Team to develop visual merchandising standards that evolve the customer experience
- Challenge the status quo and consistently identify areas for improvement, diagnose issues and work to resolve them
- Grow an understanding of customer Interests across the organization and deepen the businesses understanding of book customers
- Foster trust and understanding within the organization
- Give authentic feedback on performance and potential
- Bring out the best in others, empowering and constructively stretching colleagues
- Collaborate with others to drive flexible and iterative solutions, quickly and easily

Qualifications
WHO YOU ARE:
- University degree, in business or related field
- 5-8 years of experience in buying and category management of specialty, book retail or publishing industry
- Proven and demonstrated leadership experience
- Customer-centric approach
- Communicates a compelling and inspiring vision and sense of core purpose
- Ability to learn and adapt to a constantly changing environment
- Comfortable handling risk and uncertainty
- Creative approach to problem solving and innovation
- Ability to understand problems and recommend solutions
