Job Description

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 

As the VP, Global Sourcing & Product Development you will be responsible for leading the strategy for the product development, sourcing, production, quality, and delivery of Indigo’s private-brand products in alignment with Indigo’s assortment and overall business plan. You work closely with the company’s creative, design, merchant, finance and supply chain teams; and is also responsible for quality control and product stewardship over national branded general merchandise product.

Strategic

  • Develop, implement, and drive global sourcing strategy, ensuring alignment with Merchants and Design partners
  • Anticipate product demands and drive R&D efforts to provide product development solutions (e.g. fabric, silhouette, trim, etc.)
  • Define and develop product development strategy that focuses on eco-friendly and certified sustainable materials
  • Direct GRGM alignment with Design, Sourcing and Merchant teams, protecting and enhancing seasonal business goals
  • Support Indigo goals by executing on mid- to long-term departmental goals (2-4 years)
  • Maintain a high level of strategic foresight by identifying customer and business needs, and adjusting departmental and team objectives accordingly

Functional

  • Product Development
    • Train designers and merchants on quality and technical aspects of merchandise (cost, quality of raw materials, utilization, packaging, etc.)
    • Develop a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) process that provides visibility to component lifecycle status across all Indigo’s private-brand product
    • Manage agents and vendors with regards to: sampling process in development; planning and execution of overseas trips; development of new resources; finalization of costing, specs and Quote Sheet.
    • Drive alignment of Merchant, Design and Sourcing teams on sustainability targets and timelines
    • Transition products to sustainable trims and biodegradable packaging materials
    • Drive sustainable product development efforts and sourcing
    • Develop quality control guidelines to ensure products meet or exceed all specifications
    • Work closely with cross-functional team across the product division to ensure quality consistency and brand alignment
       
  • Production & Delivery
    • Work with the Design team during the development process to identify source markets and suppliers
    • Manage all aspects of work in progress, from purchase order confirmation to final shipment
    • Troubleshoot production/delivery problems acting or escalating issues as required
    • Develop strategic business partnerships with overseas factories
    • Maintain strong lines of communication with existing suppliers, agents, and product inspectors, as well as potential new suppliers
    • Support the supply chain team on improving speed to market, on-time delivery to distribution centers and optimizing utilization of shipping containers
    • Oversees periodic agent and vendor performance reviews, as well as factory audits and supplier risk assessments as required
    • Assist the vendor relations team in onboarding new vendors
    • Stay apprised of customs rules and free trade agreements as well as social and natural/environmental factors that can impact the flow of product
    • Drive calendar deliverables ensuring key milestones are met while protecting on-time deliveries
    • Enforce cost transparency with vendors to ensure maximum profitability
    • Accountable for seasonal vendor allocations ensuring balanced vendor loading
    • Monitor domestic and foreign trade shows to better understand Indigo’s product categories and to source product with foreign vendors
    • Organize sourcing team, vendor base and buying agents to improve quality of product and design
    • Provide orientation to vendors on Indigo’s sourcing strategy to ensure quality, innovation and brand alignments goals are met
    • Maintain ongoing evaluations of supplier performance
    • Lead Indigo’s Ethical & Social Compliance program
    • Sit at the Sustainability Roundtable and ensure that projects are delivered on-time and on-budget
    • Implement vendor sourcing and management strategy that aligns with our social compliance standards and sustainability mission
    • Achieve executive buy-in for investing in sustainable sourcing (e.g. margin erosion, pricing increases, volume reductions, etc.)
    • Consult outside resources from industry experts in sustainable practices
    • Reduce upstream carbon footprint in the private brand supply chain
       
  • Ensure the execution of team deliverables and adapt team priorities based on changing needs
  • Set/adhere to team budgets, as applicable
  • Act as an advocate for the customer by placing them at the forefront of all design and decision-making processes
  • Embrace and seek out technology that creates high tech and high touch solutions for Indigo’s customers
  • Proactively identify and anticipate customer expectations and needs
  • Challenge the status quo by consistently identifying areas for improvement, diagnosing issues and working to resolve them

Qualifications

WHO YOU ARE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field; MBA an asset
  • Minimum of 12 years’ leadership experience in global product sourcing and development, in either mass or specialty retail sector
  • Extensive knowledge in product sourcing and development from raw materials to finished product of fashion accessories, home goods (soft and hard), toys and paper products; a passion for (or personal involvement in) one or more of Indigo’s general merchandise product categories would be considered an asset
  • Multi-national experience in China, Southeast Asia, Indian Subcontinent and Europe is a must; understands the global landscape and is well versed in foreign trade agreements to ensure we are manufacturing in the right countries, factories and mills
  • Strong network of industry contacts in raw material, factories, vendors and retailers
  • Experience in start-up, high-growth environments and an entrepreneurial spirit are strong assets
  • Strong financial knowledge in a retailing context
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strategic mindset, creative problem solver, and the ability to influence in a professional manner
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills that inspire confidence
  • Excellent negotiation and marketing skills
  • Experience with PLM applications required, implementation of PLM system an asset
  • Cultural sensitivity, strong ethical foundation and ability to develop/manage productive relationships with international partners
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint required; Access an asset)
  • Valid passport and ability to travel internationally and domestically on an as-needed basis
