Job Description

As a trusted and strategic business partner, the Human Resources  Manager collaborates with retail leaders and their teams to identify solutions and make recommendations in the areas of talent, performance, and change specifically where leaders need to invest in people to increase business performance. The HRM also provides subject matter expertise on Indigo’s Talent and Performance Tools helping to build capability to attract, develop, assess and calibrate talent against a common set of High Performing Characteristics. This role provides support in both unionized and non-unionized client groups in all areas of employee relations from the grievances and arbitration process, collective agreement consultation and employment law. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 

  • Provide subject matter expertise and coaches leaders on Indigo’s Talent Management tools, providing thoughtful people recommendations to the business 
  • Understand the talent needs of each store by working closely with retail leadership teams to identify key roles and supports leader in the development of store/region succession plans from CEL to GM 
  • Proactively partner with client group to identifies talent opportunities, sharing trends and insights with leaders and peer group 
  • Embody a “partner early, partner often” philosophy with the cross-functional partners and HR COE’s, at the right time to deliver the best outcome for the business 
  • Provide subject matter expertise and empowers leaders by coaching them to confidently manage people challenges and employee conflict 
  • Provide guidance in grievance mediation, collective bargaining and union relations 
  • Respond quickly to sensitive/complex employee issues, utilizing past experience and leveraging technical expertise to provide recommendations and solutions; bringing issues to a close and communicating outcomes to all necessary individuals 
  • Provide guidance to retail leaders on the appropriateness of disciplinary and non- disciplinary actions for unionized employees 
  • Challenge the status quo and consistently identify areas for improvement, diagnose issues and working to resolve them 
  • Collaborate with other parts of HR (COE’s) & Retail to align their work with the business and to deliver seamless service 
  • Understand the Indigo Strategy and how it impacts the Region/Store/Employee and proactively identifies areas that may impact people 
  • Collaborate with and synthesizes information from various internal partners to help evaluate the effectiveness of people practices and makes recommendations for improvement 
  • Act as the “critical friend” providing ideas and challenges the conventional way of thinking through problems 
  • Work with Store Leadership to ensure leaders understand and are comfortable with medium to large scale change initiatives by adequately preparing them for the change 
  • Communicate and utilize change management principles and tools as part of any initiative 

People 

  • Role model what great relationships look like and act as an ambassador of Indigo’s people management practices

  • Educate and train leaders on the interpretation of the negotiated contract as well as labour relations strategies 
  • Represent the company in disputes arising out of the collective bargaining process 
  • Support the grievance handling process, ensuring compliance with the collective agreement and organizational policy 
  • Ensure all team members understand where they stand and have clear performance objectives aligned with Indigo and team goals 
  • Encourage leaders to focus on the behaviours that drive positive business performance and contributes to employee engagement.

Qualifications

WHO YOU ARE: 

  • Minimum 5 years of HR experience and leadership providing support to business partners in a multi-unit environment 
  • Minimum 3 or more years experience in Employment and Labour Relations matters with a concentration on Union Relations 
  • Bachelor’s degree, college diploma or equivalent experience, preferably in Human Resources, Business Administration, or Retail Management 
  • Experience working in a retail environment preferred 
  • Ability to navigate Employee Relations issues 
  • Ability to build relationships with leaders and employees, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained  
  • Challenges perceived wisdom and proposes new ideas that may contribute to better strategic decisions 
  • HR expertise in Organizational Effectiveness and/or Organizational Development  
  • Strong ability to influence all levels in the organization: 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Coaching ability 
  • Ability to leverage business insights and information to strengthen recommendations 
  • Self-managed with the ability to manage own time, juggling competing priorities and conflicting workloads 
  • Fluent bilingualism, French and English, an asset 
  • Ability to travel up to 30% in both Canada and the U.S, with access to a reliable means of transportation
